Even though he fetched 25 crores in the auction, Kolkata will only pay Green 18 crores. Do you know why?

As everyone expected, Australian star all-rounder Cameron Green made history in the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Kolkata Knight Riders acquired him for Rs. 25.20 crore. In the process, he created history by becoming the most expensive foreign player ever sold in the history of the IPL. He surpassed fellow Australian player Mitchell Starc in this regard. Starc was bought by KKR for Rs. 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 mini-auction.

Some foreign players do not participate in the mega auction. Cleverly, they participate in the mini-auction and earn significantly more money. All the franchises complained to the BCCI about this. In response, the BCCI introduced a rule stating that only the maximum retention value would be offered in the mega auction. Consequently, Green will receive only ₹18 crore.

The remaining amount will be deposited into the BCCI account. The BCCI will use this amount for the welfare of local players.
